| Summary: | Fire has been used as a management tool in the giant sequoia - mixed conifer forests of Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks since the 1960s. Fire is necessary in these forests to provide openings for giant sequoia reproduction, to thin the forest of small trees and reduce hazardous fuel accumulations, and to restore the natural ecological processes that evolved with frequent fire. Tharps Prescribed Fire was ignited on June 28, 2004, and approximately 257 acres were burned. Fuel type is short-needle pine, mixed conifer forest, and Sequoia gigantea, and the burn is designated as both a restoration and maintenance burn. Spot ignition with drip torches was the primary technique used for firing the unit. These photos show fire crew working and various images of the burn. |
