Summary:The Redwood wildfire was discovered by helicopter recon on October 9, 2002. A single monarch giant sequoia tree had been struck by lightning and was spreading burning material throughout the area. Because of air quality concerns and the presence of heavy down fuels adjacent to the crown fire, actions were taken to prevent the rapid spread of the fire. Arrowhead Hotshot Crew and Grant Grove engine crew were dispatched to the scene, while Whiskeytown Fire Use Module was assigned to monitor the fire on the ground. These images show the nature of fuels adjacent to the fire and crew working to create check lines and burn out lines with fusees.
