HELP => Advanced Search

The Advanced Search has several options for making a search more precise and narrowing the set of records retrieved.

Here are some tips for fine-tuning a search:

Advanced Search page - screen capture

Search by Author, Record Number, Standard Number, Subject, or Title

Advanced search allows you to narrow your search to retrieve records containing words within a specified field only. Click on the drop-down menu to select a field.

Word(s) Anywhere - Choose Word(s) Anywhere to search on words appearing anywhere in a record including author, title, subject, abstract, publisher, and note fields.

Author/Creator - Choose Author/Creator to search on words appearing in the name of a person or group who had responsibility for the creation of the resource, such as an author, editor, artist, photographer, director, manufacturer, sponsor, etc.

Record Number - Choose Record Number to search on an NPS Focus record number.

Standard Number - Choose Standard Number to search an ISBN, ISSN, accession number, PMIS number, or other standard number internal or external to the National Park Service.

Subject - Choose Subject to search on a subject term (e.g. endangered species, excavations, Lincoln, Abraham) and/or a geographic term (e.g. Alaska, Everglades National Park).

Title - Choose Title to search on words appearing in a title of a book, image, report, etc.

Boolean Operators

Complex searches can be constructed by using the Boolean Operators 'and,' 'or,' and 'not' to combine or exclude search terms.

Click on the round radio button to select a Boolean operator.

    and    not    or

and - Select 'and' to retrieve records containing both terms. For example, the following search will retrieve all records authored by John Smith whose title includes the words 'Fire Management.'

or - Select 'or' to retrieve records that include either term. For example, the following search will retrieve all records authored by either John Smith or Anne Miller.

not - Select 'not' to retrieve records that do not contain a term. For example, the following search will retrieve all records authored by John Smith which do not contain the subject term Civil War.

Limit by NPS Digital Library Collection

Advanced Search allows you to limit your search within a specific NPS Digital Library Collection only. Click on the drop-down menu to select a collection.

These are digital collections that include many different parks. For example, the Social Science Collection has visitor studies for hundreds of different parks.

NOTE: This limit box ONLY works for ONE database, the one called NPS Digital Library. None of the other databases use these collection names.

Search by Material Type

Advanced search allows you to limit your search to records of a specific type only, such as text, image, drawing, report, etc. Click on the drop-down menu to select a material type.

Search by Time Coverage of Content

Advanced search allows you to limit your search to a specific date range. Click on the drop-down menus to select a start date and an end date.
